This channel laments the loss of Paul Smith (April 17, 1922 - June 29, 2013), a real jazz piano maestro who led a prolific career spanning 7 decades. Drawing heavily from Art Tatum and Oscar Peterson, his style can only be described as virtuosic. The reason he is not as well known as a pianist of this stature should, might be that he chose to dedicate his skills in the fine art of accompanying singers, most notably Ella Fitzgerald. This 1978 recording on the Discwasher label, using the direct-to-disc cutting technology, finds Smith in top form as he navigates gracefully through venerable jazz standards. He is supremely accompanied by jazz giants Ray Brown on bass and Louie Bellson on drums (please use 1080p for best audio quality and timestamps to navigate through tracks).
